Old Dress, New Dress

I made this dress in high school and I decided that since it doesn't fit anymore, I would take the fabric and make a new dress out of it... So I did. :)

The original dress.

I followed this pattern and this is how it turned out:

It looks better on the hanger.

It's doing a weird bubble thing at the neckline and it has a bit of a moo moo feel to it.

It still needs some work/tailoring but otherwise it's done. I'm not totally happy with the way it looks on me but in general I think it looks alright. I am happy with the length and the way the sleeves look. The neckline is higher than I was expecting so I'm going to do some adjusting there which should also fix the bubble that's going on. I need more definition in the waist but I'm not sure how I'm going to do that. I'm thinking of some sort of a white band or a scarf that ties to cinch it in at the waist. A scarf would be easier but I'm not sure how it would look. The skirt has too much volume so I'm going to take it in at the sides to fix that.

So what do you think? Any suggestions? Kim?

I think an empire waist is the solution. And I think it would be more flattering with a V-neck perhaps.

Great Job! I would never be so ambitiious!

I saw your post asking for advice on FB so I had to come check it out. 2 things caught eye immediately... it looks like it is at least 1 size too big AND you need a better bra to wear with it. With higher necklines like that a good bra that keeps the 'girls' up makes a huge difference!

I would probably take the entire white neckline off & use bias tape of facings to finish it. I think that using ribbon, a belt or a white scarf/sash to tie around your waist like I did here would help...

But with the current neckline/bra combo I don't think it will make a big difference... I have this problem frequently were it makes my boobs look bigger, saggy & in general me wider! There's a lot of learning about fitting your own body, especially when you have kids & it changes!

Let me know if you have any questions for me :)

I actually have a Hawaiian MuMuu that is actually pretty cute on top even being so loose every where else. Idealistically you the bottom of a thicker neckline like that to be right at the top edge of your bra across the middle of your boob or lower.

Sewing for a big bust is quite a challenge! I have started choosing stretchy fabrics just for that reason.
